On Wednesday evening at the Rose Cafe in Venice, Darrylynn had the amazing opportunity to attend the "Hands Up Not Handouts"event, and visit with the Sager Foundation, an organization she has previously worked with by displaying the "Buy A Book/Give A Ball" project in the store. She also had the pleasure of meeting Lauren Bush, CEO and co-founder of FEED, an organization that sells bags, each one equalling a food amount to go to children around the world. Good Works Space welcomes Philanthropy!

New this month to Good Works Space is Alan Sutcliffe's organization 'Philanthropy', which is centered around the concept of "the choice for change through conscious consumerism."

Philanthropy has designed apparel to sell in Good Works Space. All proceeds go to benefit the UNHCR, UN Refugee Agency and WFP, The World Food Program.

Philanthropy's installation will be here May 10 to June 2010.


A message from Alan:

"My name is Alan Sutcliffe. After my experiences working along side the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) and the World food program (WFP) clearing landmines and unexploded munitions in Bosnia and in Kosovo in the late 90's, I was moved to try to create positive change in the world. This experience coupled with my studies of international relations along with my love of the arts and of fashion led me to the idea of Philanthropy. I wanted a way to combine the power of consumerism with the need for generosity. Social change, media impact, political unrest and climate instability are all moving about in a tornado coming straight at us. Layers of information both vital and insipid are bombarding us at all times. These events, the world we live in and the problems created will determine our youths' future. We need to incorporate our strengths, our visions and each of our unique talents and abilities and face these disasters head on. In Good Work Space we have created an interactive installation we feel embodies what we believe our world is trying to say. Art, music, fashion, self expression are sometimes the individual’s only message of hope of being a part of the answer. I have included the film the "Trap" in the Space by my favorite documentarist and fellow Englishman Adam Curtis. I feel this film unravels the modern concept of freedom and the juxtaposition of lifestyles, cultures and fashion during social change. I see Philanthropy as the “lifestyle” brand for the socially conscious consumer: one who acknowledges their greater role and affects that change.

Our history and experience are what have shaped us and the future is ours to define. Our purchase has power. Our choice makes change."

Revlon Recap!

Darrylynn would like to thank ALL of her amazing friends and family who helped her and her daughter Helen fundraise nearly $2,300 for the Revlon Run/Walk For Women event May 8! Darrylynn, Helen and friend Kay West showed up on Saturday morning to support the fight against women's cancers. The three ladies have all known friends and loved ones battling one of the multiple cancers that affects women only.

Helping Out Pink Wings at the Revlon Run/Walk!

Helen, our favorite Good Works Space Ambassador, and Darrylynn's lovely daughter, woke up at 3:30 AM on Saturday morning to donate her time to the Pink Wings booth at the Revlon Run/Walk For Women.
Pink Wings was founded by Courtney Lercara-Zinszer, a two-time breast cancer survivor. Courtney and her family, including daughter Sedona have helped to raise over $200,000 by participating in Breast Cancer walks and events around the country and through the sales of Pink Wings items.

A Day In My Shoes returns to Good Works Space

Saturday, May 8 photographer Amy Martin Friedman returned to Good Works Space for her "A Day In My Shoes - Part Deux" photoshoot event. Proceeds from all the women photographed with their shoes went to benefit Aviva Family and Children's Services. Thank you Amy!

This Saturday, May 8th, Amy Martin Friedman will be returning to Good Works Space for a very special charity photo shoot:

“A DAY IN MY SHOES: L.A.-Part Deux” – Charity event for AVIVA
A photography shoot at Fred Segal ZEROMINUSPLUS-Santa Monica

May 8th, 2010 (Santa Monica, CA) … A remarkable photography shoot depicting women strutting their stuff will raise money for girls who need it the most when “A Day In My Shoes: L.A-Part Deux” begins with a photo shoot at ZEROMINUSPLUS in the “GOOD WORKS SPACE” for AVIVA young women’s shelter, from 10 am to 6 pm, at Fred Segal ZEROMINUSPLUS, 500 Broadway, Santa Monica.
The exhibit was conceived by photographer Amy Martin Friedman, who presented a similarly-themed pictorial in her hometown of San Francisco last year and LA earlier this year Feb 14th. “A Day In My Shoes: L.A-Part Deux.” depicts 25 Los Angeles women from a wide variety of backgrounds clad in personally meaningful footwear. Addionally 5/25 ladies are young women from the shelter who will don their favorite pair of shoes and partake in this amazing experience. Each photograph is anonymous with no faces and will accompanied by a brief story of their “struggles, courage, and passion later this year for an October exhibit. “Subjects include a mother who walked away from her first love to find her real first love-herself; A breast cancer survior dealing with the chemo and still having the gumption to put heels on to find true beauty in herself; A mother struggling with her own mother’s illness and cherishing each moment she has with her.
Proceeds from this next event will benefit Aviva Family and Children’s Services, a 501(c)(3) non-profit ; The mission of Aviva Family and Children’s Services is to provide a comprehensive range of diverse and culturally sensitive therapeutic and educational programs to help at-risk, emotionally distressed, abused, and neglected youth – as well as their families – function more effectively as individuals and within the family and community.
Darrylynn Kaun owner of Fred Segal-ZEROMINUSPLUS has developed a community area called “GOOD WORKS SPACE”. “We’re devoting our storefront to three things: Inspiration. Self-expression. Contemplation. Good Works Space at Zero Minus Plus lets organizations bring their causes to life. It’s a room that invites discovery and reflection. And where we can challenge our friends and customers to think differently and act boldly. Good Works Space hosts worthy causes, fundraisers and special events throughout the year.”
Ms. Martin Friedman specifically selected Mother’s Day weekend as the date to photograph the ladies. “This project is all about women helping women and what better way to do that; by honoring our moms. I have two times a year that this project can take place, Mother’s Day honoring the women in our lives and Valentine’s Day-loving yourself and being your own Valentine! Each one of these stories should inspire all of us to move on, be strong, desire success, stand our ground, and believe in ourselves.”
