On March 19, photographer Amy Martin Friedman displayed her beautiful photographs of women and their shoes in Good Works Space as part of the "A Day in My Shoes" project that donates proceeds to a worthy charity called “Safe Passage” to help women of domestic spousal/partner abuse to get back on their feet. Each framed portrait had a story next to the photograph about the shoes chosen and about the hardship experienced with emphasis on how each woman overcame her circumstances.

The Leakeys discuss fair trade in Africa - March 10
Thanks to all who attended the Leakey event on the evening of March 10th!!! It was a wonderful group who came to hear Katy and Philip speak about fair trade in Africa and their own Leakey Collection which features products created by the Masaai tribe in Kenya. We learned that fair trade is an important step in leading to independence, not simply "money falling from the sky" but creating a beneficial collaboration between buyer and producer to help improve the lives of the Masaai.

'What's In Your Heart?' interactive art installment
"What's In Your Heart?" asked Petra Eiko during her February through March large-scale installment of interactive artwork in the Good Works Space. The author and artist invited individuals to reflect and share their innermost thoughts, and the result was a beautiful compilation of responses, unique yet related. The "What's In Your Heart" project provided a sense of connectedness, reminding us that we are not alone.
The illustrations and thoughts of visitors will later be compiled into a book by Eiko that will bear witness to what is truly going on in our hearts.

"Hope is a Game-Changer" Project - Buy a book/Give a ball
Zero Minus Plus is pleased to carry the line of Invisible Sun books as part of the "Hope is a Game-Changer" project. "Buy a Book/Give a Ball" was created by photographer and full-time philanthropist Bobby Sager and his Sager Family Traveling Foundation and Roadshow.
"All of Bobby's proceeds from THE POWER OF THE INVISIBLE SUN go towards the HOPE IS A GAME-CHANGER PROJECT which puts indestructible soccer balls into the hands of kids in the most difficult places around the world. These balls are a lasting symbol of hope. A light no matter how small—the power of the invisible sun."

Falling Whistles
The Good Works Space at Zero Minus Plus was pleased to host the Falling Whistles event in October 2009. The Falling Whistles story began with just a journal documenting the lives of boys in the Congo region of Africa armed on the frontlines of war with only a whistle, then evolved into a full on organization that spreads awareness. By purchasing a whistle, you not only call attention to the cause but also provide aid. Proceeds go to rehabilitate and advocate for war-affected children in the Congo. Thanks to all who came out to support!
Trash for Teaching
Our first Good Works Space installation showcased Los Angeles based non-profit Trash for Teaching. T4T collects clean and safe cast-off materials from manufacturing processes (that would otherwise become trash) and repurposes them as educational resources. It found that standard water bottles fit neatly inside cardboard spools discarded from fabric knitting mills. Our installation raised awareness and funds for an organization that recently has been diversely affected by the shortage of LAUSD funding.

"What a thrill it was that first day when the light bulb went off! Darrylynn had wanted to help her friends Steve and Kathy Stanton with their non-profit Trash for Teaching (T4T) ever since she first heard about it. Then Steve came in with that wonderfully simple Bottle Vase as a means to bring T4T much needed exposure and even more needed revenues! Darrylynn decided that she would dedicate her front room to T4T and the Bottle Vase. Steve called his friend and T4T supporter, Shiva Mandell who quickly designed an attention getting display window and the rest is history! Darrylynn sold over 400 Bottle Vases and made legions of new friends for T4T."

Good Works Space Mission
We're devoting our storefront to three things we all could use a little more of these days: Inspiration. Self-expression. And contemplation. Good Works Space at Zero Minus Plus lets organizations bring their causes creatively, movingly, to life. It's a room that invites discovery and reflection. A chance to let the world know what you're thinking. And it's where we can challenge our friends and customers to think differently, and to act boldly. Good Works Space presents ideas, interaction and inspiration by hosting worthy causes, fundraisers and special events throughout the year.
